Class Description:

This course provides water and wastewater operators with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely identify, evaluate, and work in confined spaces commonly encountered in treatment facilities, pump stations, and distribution or collection systems. Participants will learn to recognize confined space hazards, understand regulatory requirements, review proper confined space retrieval equipment, and implement safe entry procedures to protect workers and maintain compliance.

Topics include confined space classification, hazards and monitoring, ventilation techniques, lockout/tagout coordination, permit-required confined space procedures, rescue planning, and the roles and responsibilities of entrants, attendants, and entry supervisors. The course also covers practical hazard recognition specific to water and wastewater environments such as wet wells, tanks, vaults, and manholes. Upon completion, operators will have a clear understanding of safe entry procedures, required documentation, and best practices during confined space work.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify confined spaces and permit-required confined spaces in water and wastewater facilities
  • Recognize atmospheric, physical, and biological hazards associated with confined spaces
  • Understand roles, responsibilities, and permit procedures for safe entry
  • Properly use gas monitoring equipment and ventilation techniques
  • Apply emergency response and rescue planning principles
  • Hands-on experience of confined space entry

We will begin the class at the East Auburn Baptist Church for discussion and then go to the Goff Hill Reservoir for real hands-on confined space entry training.

Note: Attendees will need to bring their own confined space safety gear / PPE - As you will be able to experience confined space entry.

Bob Moody - E.J. Prescott

Bob is the Team EJP VAS Manager. He has worked at E.J. Prescott for over 25 years. He is responsible for day-to-day safety for their 28 Divisions and the training of employees and customers in both the safety field and in other industry topics. In this role, he performs various duties from site inspections, insurance reporting and claims management. Bob is also an OSHA authorized outreach trainer and able to teach both the OSHA Construction 10-hour and 30-hour classes. Additionally, he teaches classes for many industry groups like Rural Water Associations. He’s served on numerous Workers Comp boards and committees.
