Hands-On Hydrants

Session Description:
EJ Prescott in conjunction with Chris Cossette of the Wiscasset Water Department will be teaching an informational class on fire hydrants. Topics will include:


  • proper operation and maintenance of a hydrant
  • working relations between the fire department and water district
  • valve exercising and maintenance
  • system flushing: considerations and what to look for
  • pressure monitoring - what’s happening in your system during hydrant use

Note: This will be a face-to-face 2.0-hour class. Attendance will be limited to 12 attendees to comply with COVID social distancing.

Chris Cossette, Superintendent, Wiscasset Water District – Chris has 16 years’ experience in the water utility field, supervising daily operations and various capital improvement projects for Wiscasset Water District. Outside the utility he serves in the capacity of Assistant Fire Chief for his local fire department. He has knowledge of conducting various trainings through the years, one of which is NFPA hydrant and water supply training for various regional fire departments. His local Fire Department invites all mutual aid departments to attend hydrant training every other year to ensure all possible responding departments that may respond to the water system have the knowledge to properly operate and provide adequate water supply to an emergency.

Raymond Morang, Safety Training & Service Manager, E.J. Prescott – Ray has 11 years of experience in this role with E. J. Prescott which includes monthly safety trainings, providing research and guidance to managers when compliance or safety questions arise, overseeing inspection and maintenance programs for company owned equipment, inspecting and evaluating safety equipment for compliance and condition, reporting directly to company owners to ensure they are kept abreast of all safety issues, and OSHA construction outreach trainer. Ray is a member of the Maine Water Utilities Association’s board of education and does field inspections and training for service technicians.
