The USEPA’s Long Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (LT-2) applies to all water systems with a surface water or groundwater under direct influence of surface water (GWUDI) source. The intent of the rule is to improve control of microbial pathogens by requiring monitoring and, if necessary, treatment for the protozoa, Cryptosporidium. July 1, 2008 is a key compliance date for small water systems (Schedule 4 Systems – surface or GWUDI systems serving fewer than 10,000 people). By this date, these small systems must submit to the Maine Drinking Water Program their plans regarding source water sampling and/or plans for treating for Cryptosporidium.
