Maine Rural Water Recognized
Release: June 16, 2005

BRUNSWICK—The Environmental Protection Agency Region I awarded the Maine Rural Water Association an Environmental Merit Award for outstanding efforts in preserving New England’s environment.

Regional Administrator, Robert Varney, recognized Maine Rural Water’s expertise in providing training and technical assistance to small water and wastewater systems. In 2004, the Association’s professional field staff helped resolve over 500 water quality violations. In addition, they trained almost 3,000 water and wastewater operators.

Executive Director, Steven Levy and Director of Operations, Kirsten Hebert, received the award on behalf of the Association. The Maine Rural Water Association, based in Brunswick, is a private, non-profit organization that represents almost 600 water and wastewater systems through technical, financial, and managerial support. The Association’s goal is to provide safe drinking water and protect the environment at an affordable cost to users.
